Xavier's quest to revolutionize Indigenous tech
Sep 23, 2025
Xavier's journey begins where many great stories do, with a personal mission born from lived experience. As a computer science student at Western University, he carries the weight and pride of being the second member of his family to attend university. Growing up in a complex family dynamic, Xavier developed the kind of resilience that doesn't just help you survive, it helps you envision a better future for others.
Building bridges between worlds
Today, Xavier stands at the intersection of two powerful forces: cutting-edge technology and Indigenous wisdom. At Western University's Indigenous Student Center, he's immersed in machine learning and artificial intelligence alongside fellow Indigenous changemakers from across Canada.
"I am looking forward to bringing these learnings back to my community and continuing to work on building ethical, inclusive and Indigenous-centered AI solutions," Xavier explains, his vision extending far beyond the classroom. His commitment to human-centric AI technology aligns closely with TELUS' approach to incorporating Indigenous perspectives and intelligence into technological innovation.
A comprehensive vision for change
Xavier's work operates on multiple interconnected levels, each addressing a critical need in Indigenous communities. His most ambitious project is developing an educational platform specifically designed to teach Indigenous languages and cultural teachings. This digital solution helps to maintain vital connections to heritage while embracing modern technology.
Recognizing that sustainable change requires building capacity from the ground up, Xavier is also laying the groundwork for a non-profit organization dedicated to providing computer science tutoring specifically for Indigenous students. This initiative aims to break down barriers and create accessible pathways into the tech industry for Indigenous youth, ensuring the next generation has the tools to continue this important work.
Community impact beyond technology
Xavier's commitment to social impact extends beyond the digital realm. He volunteers at local food banks, directly addressing food insecurity in his community. "By actively participating in these initiatives, I can contribute to positive social outcomes by addressing immediate needs and fostering a sense of community," he explains. This hands-on community work grounds his technological innovations in real-world needs and relationships.
Programming a brighter future
In a world where technology often feels disconnected from cultural heritage, Xavier is writing new code, literally and figuratively. His story represents more than individual achievement; it's a blueprint for how personal challenges can become fuel for systemic change. As he pioneers new frontiers in Indigenous tech innovation, Xavier isn't just building software, he's engineering a digital bridge between ancient wisdom and artificial intelligence, creating pathways for his community to thrive in both traditional and technological spaces.
