Inspiring Indigenous representation in tech: Israel’s story
Aug 24, 2026
Raised by a single mother, Israel learned early the value of resilience, hard work and giving back. As an Ojibwe student from Nipissing First Nation pursuing computer science at Dalhousie University, he’s navigated classrooms where his culture was invisible and industries where Indigenous Peoples are rarely seen in leadership.
Rather than accepting these limitations, Israel transformed them into purpose.
"As an Indigenous student, I have always been aware of the barriers that exist for people like me in education and in industries like technology. Instead of letting these challenges hold me back, they have fueled my determination to lead, support others, and make a meaningful impact in my community and future career," Israel reflects.
Beyond coding and development, Israel has discovered an unexpected tool for transformation and connection to others: fitness. He views physical and mental strength as inseparable, using fitness to inspire confidence and resilience in others.
Over the next year, Israel plans to formalize his impact through three concrete initiatives: mentoring underrepresented students in tech, organizing fitness meetups to promote mental wellness and amplifying Indigenous voices in STEM spaces.
The measure of success isn't abstract. As Israel notes, "Success isn't just about numbers, it's about impact. If I can support even one student by helping them see a future for themselves in tech, I know I will have made a difference.”
The TELUS Student Bursary means Israel can pursue these goals with less financial strain, allowing him to focus fully on both his education and his community work.
