Opening locked doors through personalized technology training
For many young mothers, taking care of their children while trying to obtain a high school diploma becomes a much more challenging task with their plate already so full.
Some of these women also face a variety of mental health and learning difficulties, which leads some to drop out of high school without being able to obtain the support they need to graduate.
That’s why the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation is proud to support programs like iSisters Technology Mentoring, in partnership with Ottawa’s Youville Centre, which helps to deliver 1-on-1 learning programs to young women through technology.
iSisters creates and delivers computer programs and lessons at no cost to women in need, helping to equip them with the skills and confidence they need to participate fully in their community and achieve their goals.
With Assistive Technology program funding from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, young mothers acquire new computer skills and work habits that help them meet educational milestones and become independent learners, regardless of their academic and economic challenges.
“For many of our students, learning how to make use of assistive technology makes the difference as to whether they will graduate from high school or not”, commented Bev McKillop, Executive Director, Youville Centre.
Graduating from high school is not the only benefit these young women receive; many have continued their education, making use of the skills they have learned from this program to further their post-secondary learning.
By leveraging technology, these young women are learning new skills to take on life’s challenges themselves and are taking ownership of their future while achieving new goals they never thought possible.
