Empowering youth to create a healthier future for our planet

May 7, 2024

Groundwater is crucial to the health of ecosystems and is an important source of drinking water. Our charity partner, Living Lakes Canada, has more than 20 years of experience working to protect freshwater sources nationwide. They work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, academia and environmental professionals to support intergenerational knowledge transfer and sharing with the goal of fostering youth engagement in the environmental sector.

The grant they received from TELUS Friendly Future Foundation enabled them to create a Centre for Water Excellence for youth across BC to actively learn about and engage in the responsible management and conservation of fresh water. By promoting water literacy through educational programs and explorations into emerging technologies, this initiative is providing youth with valuable learning opportunities, practical knowledge on how to counter the effects of climate change, and preparing them for careers in the growing green economy.

Training youth like PJ to become water stewards

“I’m really thankful TELUS Friendly Future Foundation exists,” said PJ Butler, Water Monitoring Technician with Living Lakes Canada. “It has allowed me to work for such a great organization and get hands-on experience in the field I want to ultimately be working in for the rest of my life.”
