From foster care to forensic psychology, Kay's story of transformation
Aug 29, 2025
When Kay arrived in Canada from Jamaica at age 13, she carried with her an unwavering spirit that would prove invaluable in the years ahead. Now a Forensic Psychology student at Ontario Tech University and a recipient of the TELUS Momentum Student Bursary, powered by CIBC Foundation, Kay's story is a powerful testament to resilience and determination.
"Education has always been my pathway to creating meaningful change," Kay shares. Despite facing significant challenges, including being placed in foster care at age 14 as a newly arrived immigrant, Kay's commitment to social justice remained unshakable. Today, she's turning those early life experiences into fuel for positive change.
Creating lasting impact
While managing her studies, Kay works at a group home for adults with dual diagnoses, including individuals living with schizophrenia, Down Syndrome, and autism. "Working with these adults brings me immense joy," Kay explains. "It's shown me how vital it is to advocate for marginalized communities."
The TELUS Momentum Student Bursary, powered by CIBC Foundation, has been transformative for Kay, empowering her to increase her community engagement. She also spends her time supporting formerly incarcerated Black LGBTQ+ individuals, helping them access essential resources for successful re-entry into society, including housing support and employment mentoring.
"Every person deserves a chance to rebuild their life," Kay emphasizes. "Through my work, I'm hoping to create pathways for those who might otherwise be overlooked by the system."
The TELUS Momentum Student Bursary, a groundbreaking $2 million partnership between the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation and CIBC Foundation, is supporting 500 Black students across Canada by 2028. Kay represents the kind of changemakers this initiative aims to empower, post-secondary students who pursue their educational goals while using their opportunities to lift others up alongside them.
As Kay continues her journey in Forensic Psychology, she remains committed to her ultimate goal: advocating for marginalized communities and creating lasting change. Her story exemplifies how removing educational barriers can empower the next generation of leaders who will shape a more inclusive and equitable future for all Canadians.
